Yoga for the Nervous System
Our nervous system is our body’s built in control center – when working optimally, we sleep better, we handle stress better, digest our food well, and have an overall sense of wellbeing. When we have a nervous system that is dysregulated (generally due to chronic stress and/or trauma) we may find ourselves stuck in patterns of fight/flight/freeze or shutdown. This can look like burnout, anxiety, depression, digestive issues, trouble sleeping, fatigue, and having trouble coping with stress.
The ancient practice of yoga can help guide our systems back into regulation. Join Meghan for a two-hour workshop where we will explore yoga’s effects on the nervous system, and how practices such as asana, pranayama and meditation can bring our systems back into organic alignment and flow.
We will begin with a discussion of how the nervous system works, focusing on the autonomic functions of the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches, as well as an introduction to Polyvagal Theory and how it can be applied to a yoga practice. You will get a sense of your own nervous system’s tendencies and how to best create a practice that suits your individual needs.
The discussion will be followed by a practice that incorporates asana, pranayama and meditation from the lens of nervous system regulation. This practice is open to all levels and experience.
